  • HISTORY OF S.W.A.M. | S.W.A.M. Ottawa

Our Story SWAM is a program that has been making waves in the Ottawa community for over 15 years! With a rich history and proven track record, it's no wonder why so many people have benefited from this incredible program. Here's a quick snapshot of our history! 2009 Swimming with a Mission (SWAM) has come a long way since its inception in 2009. Initially known as Making Waves, the organization started with just 12 swimmer-instructor pairs. Over the years, we have evolved and changed our name twice before finally settling on SWAM. 2018 In 2018 we underwent our final name change to Swimming with a Mission (SWAM); after being SwimAbility from 2016-2018. We also had the privilege of serving over 100 swimmers during that year. 2020 Our program continued to thrive despite the Covid-19 pandemic, thanks to the tireless of our instructors. They went above and beyond create a plethora of online resources, social media content, and videos to keep our students engaged and learning. Today We are determined to bring our program back to pre-pandemic levels, and we're making great progress. We're thrilled to that our program keeps growing year to year!

FUNDRAISING Learn more about our fundraising goals: At SWAM Ottawa, our goal has always been to keep our programs affordable and accessible for the families in our community. This winter, our pool rental costs increased by 20%, but we made the choice to keep registration fees the same. Our aim is to reduce financial barriers so that every child can access water safety and feel confident in the water. Your donations help make that possible, especially as pool fees continue to rise every session. We’re also thinking ahead. There is a growing demand for our programs, and we’re excited about the possibility of expanding into a second pool so we can welcome more participants. We hope to invest in new adaptive equipment such as adapted lifejackets and sensory toys to improve our participants' experience in the water! None of this happens without community support. SWAM Ottawa is built on people who believe in inclusion, access, and meeting kids where they are. Thank you for supporting our work, believing in our mission, and dreaming big with us. SWAMathon 2026 Thanks to donations and community sponsors, we raised over $6700 for the 2026 SWAMathon! Teams of volunteers swam laps depending on how much the fundraised and competed against each other. The event was wildly successful and was a huge contribution to maintaining low registration fees.
